Real friendship is hard to come across these days. When you find someone you instantly click with, you have a special bond with that person. I believe that every person has the instinct to love and trust. It’s a power that can be sparked so openly which is such a beautiful thing. Loving is hard, but is so rewarding at the end of the day.
There are usually three types of love we experience. Obviously, we experience love from the first people we meet, our parents and family. When you are a newborn, the only thing you know is the people who gave you life. We experience love from romance and having a significant other, a type of love we all long for. Lastly, you can only feel blessed to experience friendship love from people you meet from school or other activities outside of your immediate family circle. I wanted to share a friendship that I am continually grateful for, that is with my best friend, Jill.
In sixth grade, I was still going to in-person school in our local district. I would get super anxious on the days leading up to the first day of school. I knew about Jill from previous years at our elementary school, but I never really knew her personally. Our school was divided up between, “teams” and by chance, we had made it to the same team which meant we had the same classes and teachers.
I messaged her asking to be friends and in our awkward elementary school heads, we bonded over both of our names being Jillian and our favorite colors were both pink. When I scrolled up from these texts all the way back from 2018, I couldn’t help but laugh at all of the secondhand embarrassment I felt. Jill even had like a thousand boyfriends in sixth grade, and we read texts about how her sixth-grade boyfriend, “just understood her.”
When I was younger, I had an undying fear of sleepovers and making plans outside of school. It always made me a bit anxious and I never really loved leaving my house. This sort of made Jill and I drift many years ago. However, we were always friends. Fast forward to the summer of 2022, I rekindled my relationship with Jill and from then we have been inseparable best friends. I simply could not be more grateful.
Her parents bought her a car for her 16th birthday, and while her dad was gone we would take her keys and blast music in the car. It was the first moment in a while where I actually laughed so hard my stomach hurt. From there, I came over almost every weekend and we never had a bad time. We would sing Disney songs, watch movies, prank call people, play videogames, and the list goes on. I even made her a cute little nickname which is her name in my phone, “My Buttercup.” All of these memories I made with her, I will most definitely cherish forever.
I love that I have met my forever sister and future maid of honor who has my back through every major and minor inconvenience of my life. The difference between Jill and anyone else in my life is that she loves every flaw, every imperfection, and every little detail about me, as I love her the same way. I love to think about our future together as best friends, like what our weddings will look like or having cute little baby versions of us when we are middle-aged and our hairline starts receding. Anytime I’m sad or upset, I know exactly who to turn to. I love you Jill, words can’t describe how blessed I am to have such a strong friendship in this pretty little game we call life.
Latte Love,
Jill
