Christmas Dreaming

The Christmas season is a surreal time to be engulfed by love and warmth. I've taken this month to reflect on the things I cherish, the people I hold dear, and what exactly the future holds for me. Spending time with those closest to me is so special, and I had the opportunity to reflect on these things on Christmas Eve, at Mass, under the light of God, and with the two most important women in my life.

“Cold are the people, winter of life, we tremble in shadows, this cold endless night…” These are the opening lines of a beautiful song that was sung during our evening Mass. Night of Silence beautifully captures the ability to find peace and warmth in quiet, still moments. I think of Night of Silence when it’s late, writing in the living room, snuggling with Millie, or looking out my window at the lights of North Huntingdon in the early morning, just above the horizon. During this season, it’s important to stay warm, with the joy of others to uplift us.

“Voice in the distance, call in the night, on wind you enfold us, you speak of the light…” The song describes the silence being gently interrupted by the distant voice, the wind that enfolds us, and the subtle reminder of light breaking through the darkness. "Rumors of a dawn so embracing, breathless love awaits darkened soul…" speaks of the replenishment of a lonely, weary soul. And yet again, the sun rises, embracing us with the warmth of a new day. What more could we ask for?

The holidays can be a tough time, reminding us of what we don't have or what we long for. Night of Silence reflects on the things that truly matter, who we are surrounded by, and ultimately, what we believe in and have faith in. This is what really matters.

These times teach us how to deal with the darkness in our hearts and how to move forward, strongly, together. While Christmas time can be difficult for many, it is important to spend these extra days and hours making them special, because we never know how much longer we have to celebrate these moments. 2024 has been a wonderful, special, and long year. I am so excited for the memories I will continue to make with the people I love the most. It seems like a reflection is in order!
