Halloween Eve

Halloween is a time of spooks and scares, highlighting core memories for people of all ages. Growing up, Halloween and the month of October meant a lot to me for plenty of reasons, but mostly because it was a time my family and I bonded over the silly traditions these occasions brought. Between pumpkin carving, and dressing up as our favorite characters to go Trick Or Treating, it was an exciting time in my childhood. I’d like to take this post to share what these times were like.

Every year, my family and I would visit a pumpkin patch called Schrams to pick out our favorite pumpkins to carve. Each pumpkin we brought home was meticulously chosen by every family member. Once we got home, we’d gather around the dining room table, covering it with newspaper scraps to begin our work. First, we’d cut off the tops and scoop out the “pumpkin guts,” then create funny cutouts of whatever we desired. It was a lovely tradition we shared each year, displaying our creations for the neighbors to see. I remember my brothers, dad, mom, and me all together, finishing the night peacefully, falling asleep to the crisp, chilly air that enveloped the house.

My childhood was filled with those overpriced Halloween costumes we’d wear just once a year. Even though it was difficult, my parents always made sure I had nice things. After a long day at school, it felt like a treat to rush to Spirit Halloween or one of those temporary costume stores that popped up in pool shops to find the perfect outfit. I remember one year dressing up as candy corn and going to a theme park with my brothers. I was terrified of roller coasters, but I mustered the courage to ride a small one with my brother. We laughed, ate, and truly enjoyed being kids. I’m grateful for those memories. Even though they feel distant now, they’ll always be wrapped around my heart.

Running around the neighborhood collecting candy on Halloween night was a truly special experience. October will always be my favorite month. It reminds me of those carefree days of childhood, but it also holds a deeper significance. Each year, the trees change colors and the temperature drops, yet we hold on to those around us, continuing to live and move forward as life unfolds.

I do miss the times when I was little and free, without so many burdens. However, I truly appreciate the moments I get to spend with my family and friends now. Every fall brings a new opportunity to enjoy the beautiful colors of the trees and capture lovely pictures in the tall grass.

To finish off October, here’s a small poem to end this month on a wonderful note.

'

Fall Falls

October, a time of vivid hues,
A magic infused with red and orange too
The chilly air and the pumpkin's scent
Won't ever pull me away from where you went

The times we ran beneath the sun,
All those moments filled with fun.
I wonder if you think of me too
I’m sure I ponder it more than you.

I miss your warm embrace;
I never knew the chase,
Each October, I sit and yearn,
For a lesson I’ll never truly learn.

The memories wrapped around my heart
Slice right through me like a dart.
Every memory I behold
Is an autumn leaf that quickly unfolds.
