School's Back!

Published on 27 August 2024 at 10:00

As the seasons change, so do we. It feels like just a day ago I released, “School’s Out,” on my blog. Well, school’s back! I was so excited to finally have a break from the workload of school and, even more importantly, to spend time with my friends and family. My junior summer was a time of happiness, dreams, and security. Throughout the summer season, I was the luckiest girl, friend, and daughter. Similarly to my recap of the school year, this piece will be a recap of summer ‘24.

During the summer, like always, I spent much time with my best friend, Jill. Although, ironically, we share the same name, we also share many similar interests. We had sleepovers, watched our favorite movies, and I’m pretty sure we played ten rounds of Fortnite per day. In early June, it was my Mom’s birthday. I held a get-together with our family and friends to celebrate her with a sprinkle cake. My Mom’s happiness was radiating, which in turn, made me happy. I saw her flourish on her birthday, which was easily one of the summer's many highlights.

I visited other friends over the summer, including a friend I went to PA Cyber with, Liv. We spent an entire day together, shopping, getting hibachi, and finishing the night with some espresso-flavored ice cream. It was an absolute blast, and I’ve grown to love and appreciate our friendship. She went to WVU this year to study exercise physiology. I’m glad we had some time together before she moved into her new apartment.

Continuing the summer, I worked to the wit’s end. I kept up with all three of my jobs, babysitting, Kohl’s, and teaching at Maestro Minds. Teaching music to students is absolutely my favorite job, and I am so incredibly lucky to do that every month of the year. My co-worker and one of my absolute best friends, Summer, and I, spent a lot of time together over the months. We ate at our favorite brunch restaurant, First Watch, had endless sleepovers, and above all made amazing memories that I will cherish forever.

Further, I saw my favorite artist, Laufey, with my cuzy, Isa, which was most definitely one of my favorite memories of the break. We took beautiful pictures in the magnificent Heinz Hall, and I heard the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra - live. I purchased two Laufey t-shirts and a tote bag, which was all part of her merch collection. Isa and I sipped on, “Magnolia Tea,” and sang the night away. For the encore, Laufey sang Misty, and I think I passed away for a split second.

During July, Jill and I spent an entire week at my house. Over the 4th of July weekend, we watched fireworks, made dessert, and had a cookout. I had such a blast with her, and the time stopped when we were together.  We even went to play mini-golf and eat ice cream at our local ice cream shop.

One of the biggest moments of the summer was my final performance as a student at Maestro Minds, and seeing my students perform was also very special. I played as Ethel in Footloose for my senior show. The little ones performed in Seussical and I helped them prepare their lines and songs, which was just so rewarding. I also created most of the sets and props for the shows.

The first day back to school was just like any other, but this year was a bit different. August 26th was my last first day, which makes me at a loss for words. I am so proud of myself for making it this far, and I am even prouder that I’m one step closer to graduation. Over the weekend, Jill and I made senior boxes to keep memories of the year to come. The first-day jitters still get me, but just like the seasons, I know I have to adapt to the new circumstances. This fall, I am so excited for more Coffee Talk posts and memories created with my friends and family. My senior year will be the best yet.

Latte Love,

Jill
