january 25th was the day i realized i’d be alone on valentine’s day. similarly to emma’s love life, mine sucks. i went on my very first date with a guy i was head over heels with. our cute little story ended very quickly, but as taylor swift once said, “i swear i don’t love the drama, it loves me.” so i suppose we should jump into it.
for once in my life, i will make a long, dramatic, and depressing story very short. i thought this guy cared about me and turns out he was a big stinkin jerko who only and will only ever care about himself. writing it down over and over again definitely does not make me feel better. and after three weeks of listening to, “i miss you, i’m sorry” by gracie abrams and singing, “vampire” by olivia rodrigo, i now realize that lana del ray not winning a grammy was much, much more devastating than getting my heart broken. crushed like a lollipop, this stupid boy stopped talking to me out of nowhere after ghosting me for an entire week. he didn’t even have the decency to call. i hate boys.
did you know that exactly one week after valentine’s day, theres a day called, “breakup day?” it’s one we should all be celebrating. everyone needs to experience a breakup or some type of heartache. experiencing these feelings gives you a bit of a backbone and lets you appreciate the beauty of being your own best friend.you don’t need a big, boujee promise ring or a thirty dollar box of chocolates to make you happy. valentine’s day is a day that represents love and affection for others or for yourself. this valentine’s day, i will be flying to disney world, and when i get back from the most magical place on earth, i’ll be with some of my closest friends for a galentines day party. (for the girls only.)
this year i was expecting to have a basket of hello kitty gifts, eat the sweetest of chocolates, have a romantic meal, and above everything else, spend the day with my valentine. in reality, i’ll probably be crying over some guy that couldn’t give a shit about me. hopefully i’ll still be eating the chocolates though!
so if you’re alone on valentine’s day this year, you are definitely 1,000% not alone. snuggle up with a good true crime documentary or violently sob to breakup songs all night while depressingly eating your heart away with an ice cream sundae. either way, you’ll make it through.
the point is, you don’t need a lover to make your day happy or important. so start your day off by taking your meds and drinking some iced coffee. even though many of us will be in a slump, just add some glitter and buy yourself some chocolate, and you’ll be on top. on the brightside, at least you don’t have to worry about buying a gift for your valentine this year. or if you do have to buy a gift, don’t spend anything expensive. before you know it you’ll be thirty researching a old, crusty man with a receding hairline and wonder, “i wonder why i spent three hundred dollars on him when i was a teenager.”
xoxo,
jill
